12/8/2023 0 Comments 90s 00s nostalgia![]() And maybe revisit some sci fi and masculinity elements of Total Recall, Judge Dredd, Independence Day, Terminator 2, Starship Troopers, the Matrix. Musically, alt-rock is still around, so I'd go for industrial or grunge, maybe G-funk, something obsolete that deserves more attention. Intensity was normal then: Cobain screaming and killing himself, Chris Farley screaming then kills himself, over the top violence like Braveheart or Steven Seagal, bands like Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Hole, etc. If I were creating a style using '90s elements, I would firstly go for intensity. House music, acid, and early techno are revisited all the time, and these don't count as synthwave nor '80s nostalgia. Michael Jackson and Madonna were popular. Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos, Jean Michel Jarre were not popular musicians at all. It's like how Tarantino and Rodriguez did Grindhouse. The artists just creatively combine specific elements from the '80s to create something stylistic and unique. The TV shows, films, and music associated with synthwave didn't really exist in the '80s. As well as a lot more attention being paid to PS1 era games - which is already happening with many indie games right now.įirstly, I don't think that the synthwave movement is that nostalgia-based. I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight revival of 00s style gross-out comedies and a film or two about a daredevil group like Jackass. Even Spiderman was launched with a track from Nickelback. With things like the Matrix/Fight Club/Donnie Darko/Blade/Boondock Saints and Linkin Park/Marilyn Manson/Evanescence all over the place. It will be interesting to see how it goes down though because it was actually quite an angsty period of time in terms of pop-culture in some respects. Unless it's like the scene where the dorky 70s kid wore flares to school. ![]() Somehow I'll doubt we'll see too many characters with baggy 3/4 jeans covered in chains. Well, if they're anything like the nostalgia movies we have now about previous generations - they'll make outfits which have a 90s/00s vibe but a contemporary fit and normal people will listen to music that only like 3% of the population would have heard of. My childhood was mostly in the 90s and even after democracy and capitalism hit us over here, popculture trends were still pretty late to arrive to my country. It's all very nice, but I'm not really connecting with it that much because I was born 1989 behind the Iron Curtain. The stylistic choices of movies like The Guest and It Follows are fun to watch, the 80s synth music scores and pop song-filled soundtracks like Atomic Blonde are fun to listen to, and things like It and Stranger Things bring back an era that many of my favorite movies came out in. ![]() On a personal note: The 80s nostalgia wave that's still washing over Hollywood is nice and all, but I have a hard time connecting with it. What's some other late 90s/early 00s nostalgia fuel that you think will make it into the future wave of nostalgia movies? Meanwhile, mobile phones transformed into sleek and indispensable companions.I can't wait for movies that unironically use Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys songs, kids that play with Tamagochis and Pokemon trading cards, and subplots that involve a character switching his movie collection from vhs to dvd. As the 2000s dawned, iPods revolutionized music, and MP3 sharing took flight. Chatrooms on clunky PCs marked the Internet's early days. The 1990s saw the rise of Tamagotchis, while homes resonated with the melodies of elegant HiFi music systems. Ghetto blasters boomed, and the Commodore 64 sparked the digital age. The 1980s brought the mind-bending Rubik's Cube, along with vibrant neon fashion. Evel Knievel's toy motorcycles raced into our hearts, while flares and big collars defined fashion. Transitioning into the '70s, warm tones of brown and yellow painted the era. For example, In the 1960s, the world was swaying to The Beatles' tunes, and mini-skirts were all the rage. He also mentioned a few memorable events that reminds him most of the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s. We were free to do and think many things without today’s pressures." Plus, I was ages 8-18 which are very impressionable years! There was more freedom to do and say what you wanted. We've reached out to Ian Wright, the admin of 'I love Nostalgia' and here's what he had to say about his love for the golden eras: "I’d love to go back to the 80s because it was such a simpler more fun time.
